California’s New DROP Tool Helps Protect Your Personal Information

California residents now have a helpful new privacy tool called the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, or DROP. Designed to make personal-data protection easier, the program lets consumers submit one request to delete their information from hundreds of registered data brokers at once.

Before DROP, consumers often had to contact data brokers individually to request deletion or opt-out, which could be time-consuming and frustrating. Even then, people first had to identify which brokers held their information, a process that was often difficult because personal data can be bought, sold, and shared across many companies and databases.

For many households and business owners, the biggest benefit is convenience. Instead of tracking down each company one by one, users can rely on a centralized, state-run process that saves time and reduces the burden of managing privacy requests. DROP may also help cut down on unwanted marketing, solicitation, spam, scam emails, and the spread of personal information across broker databases.
